50/30/20 comparison

The 50/30/20 guideline is one way to compare a budget: about 50% of take-home income for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and debt repayment. It is a general guideline, not a requirement.

This calculator is a planning tool. Your actual spending may vary, and some irregular or unexpected expenses may not be included.

How to use this calculator

Add each income source and expense using the frequency that matches real life. Weekly, every-two-weeks, twice-monthly, quarterly, six-month, and yearly entries are normalized automatically.

Handling irregular expenses

A $1,200 insurance bill every six months becomes $200 per month. A $3,000 yearly vacation budget becomes $250 per month. This keeps nonmonthly costs visible in the monthly plan.

About the 50/30/20 comparison

Default rows carry a starting classification, which you can change. Needs, wants, and savings-or-debt shares are informational; circumstances differ.

Are every two weeks and twice a month the same?

No. Every two weeks means 26 payments a year; twice a month means 24.

Does savings count as an expense?

It reduces money remaining but is shown separately from living and debt expenses.
